What is GPT?

July 22, 2025

GPT is an AI model that understands and generates human-like text by learning from large datasets, enabling tasks like writing, translating, and answering.

What is GPT?

A GPT is a kind of LLM (large language model) that uses deep learning to create human-like text. Neural networks are trained on a huge dataset that contains code and text, and they enable them to generate and understand contextually relevant and coherent responses.

GPT is a key element in the space of generative AI, and its primary job is pushing the boundaries of what seems possible with AI. This way, it enables a machine to create human-quality and creative content.

One of the most fascinating parts of GPT is its ability to adapt across domains. Whether it is writing essays, summarizing complex documents, answering customer queries, or even helping with code generation. It learns the patterns, tone, and nuances from its training data to mimic natural conversations impressively well.

The unique feature about GPT models is they can simulate human-created output. More than 80% of Fortune 500 companies have begun to use ChatGPT for their workflows, and it happened within a few months of its launch.

The History of GPT

It is no surprise that GPT has evolved in the field of NLP (natural language processing). A step-by-step guide to different GPT models are as follows:

The Origin of GPT-1 (2018)

The transformer architecture was the foundation of all GPT models, and Vaswani et al. introduced it in 2017. This architecture is intended to deal with sequences of data. The design made it perfect to carry out the NLP jobs. Transformers influenced self-attention mechanisms and permitted models to consider the significance of different words present in a sentence, and it resulted in improved contextual understanding.

The Introduction of GPT-2

OpenAI released GPT-2 in February 2019. This was a model that was built on the foundation that GPT-1 had laid. However, GPT-2 was remarkably larger, and it had 1.5 billion parameters. It made it more potent. Again, it was more capable of carrying out highly contextually relevant and coherent relevant text too.

The General Overview of GPT-3 Capabilities

GPT-3 was introduced in June 2020, and it symbolized unmatched versatility and could perform a huge array of jobs, though it lacked no or very little task-specific training data. GPT-3 could carry out few-shot learning, and unlike its contemporaries that needed a comprehensive fine-tuning for particular jobs, GPT-3 could create precise responses based on a few instances.

The Introduction of GPT-4

OpenAI released GPT-4 in March 2023, and it introduced many improvements, augmented contextual understanding, and smoother dealing with complicated language jobs. It was also significant in lessening bias. The GPT-4 model was intended to address a few limitations that its predecessors had, and it made it an ethical and more dependable tool for every NLP application. This model is trained on more than 1 trillion parameters, unlike GPT-3, which was trained on 175 billion parameters.

How Does GPT Work?

A GPT model functions as a deep neural network made up of multiple layers of artificial neurons, structured in a way that mimics how the human brain processes information. It is built on the Transformer architecture (originally developed by Google researchers), which introduced the idea of assessing all parts of a sentence at once rather than word-by-word.

This is made possible through self-attention, a mechanism that allows the model to weigh the importance of each word in relation to others; similar to how humans focus on different parts of a sentence for context.

The model is trained using vast amounts of text—books, websites, code, and conversations, which helps it grasp the intricacies of human language.

During training, GPT learns from its mistakes using a process called backpropagation. This enables it to fine-tune its understanding and improve prediction quality over time, eventually producing text that feels remarkably human.

Applications of GPT

The most remarkable thing is you can use a GPT model in various ways, and a few instances where its usage becomes apparent are:

1. Customer Service

Businesses opt to use GPT models to enhance customer satisfaction and lessen support costs. GPT models ensure that every person has been availing of quick customer service support round-the-clock without navigating the phone menus.

2. Creation of Content

GPT models also help in creating superior-quality content for social media, blogs, websites, etc. These models turn into worthwhile tools for people and businesses alike who look forward to creating informative and engaging content regularly.

3. Generating Code

GPT technology can revolutionize the manner a developer works. Developers use it when they want to speed up the process of development or automate different jobs. This gives them enough time to complete creative and other highly complicated tasks.

4. Chatbots

A wider audience can use chatbots to answer queries. Chatbots also help them in engaging in a casual conversation. The progressions in the GPT technologies promise to bring forward more human-like and sophisticated chatbots in the forthcoming days.

The Tech Evolution of GPT

The Tech Evolution of GPT

GPT has an optimistic future that is shaped by incessant progressions in AI technology, and these progressions are classified into a few areas:

1. Increased Size and Complexity of the Model

The drift of the model’s size and complexity will only expand with each passing day. If you look at the future versions, including GPT-4, you will witness more complex and larger features. This enhancement in the size of the model will result in augmentations in the quality of text that is generated.

2. Real-time Learning and Adaptation

GPT models don’t actually learn in real time. Most are trained on large static datasets, which means they don’t update their knowledge once deployed. However, future versions may incorporate continuous learning techniques. This allows them to evolve alongside the data they interact with.

3. Specialized Models

Though the present GPT models work as generalists, the forthcoming developments might witness the emergence of more models that are tailored for particular industries or tasks. Another important trait of these GPT models is they can excel in some specific areas, including medical diagnosis, financial analysis, and legal writing.

4. Amended Multimodal Capacities

Future GPT iterations are expected to come equipped with enhanced multimodal capabilities. This will enable them to process and generate not just text, but also high-quality audio, images, and potentially even video. This evolution will lead to more versatile AI systems that can engage users through richer, more intuitive interactions.

On paper, Banksathi had everything it took to make a profitable application. However, on the execution front, there were multiple loopholes - glitches in apps, modules not working, slow payment disbursement process, etc. Now to make the application as useful as it was on paper in a real world scenario, we had to take every user journey apart and identify the areas of concerns on a technical end.
